While I may love a luxurious hotel stay, this laid-back wine country inn is one I recommend again and again to friends looking for an easy, casual place to stay in Charlottesville. @crossroadsinnva is historic, elegant, and rustic all at once, and it’s the perfect home base for a weekend in Virginia wine country.

Lunch in a 1700s tavern. Antiquing. Exploring a hunt country town. Relaxing by a pool overlooking the rolling Virginia hills. Is there a better way to spend a Sunday? (No, there is not)

• Lunch at @huntersheadtavern
• A stop by @trinitythriftboutique
• Bopping around @visitmiddleburg, where I picked up a small original seascape by @artbymegan at @shopcastlegallery and, from the darling Atelier Maison pop-up, block print pillows and a set of Helen Frankenthaler notecards (I love an art notecard, and I was moved by an exhibit of her work years ago at @parrishartmuseum).
• Enjoying the gorgeous pool and property at @goodstoneinn

I was listening to a podcast recently where the hosts were lamenting their sad desk lunches. And it occurred to me — I haven’t actually had a sad desk lunch in several years. Every day, no matter how busy, I have a few minutes where I sit in the kitchen and eat lunch. It wasn’t originally by design but, by putting a small bistro table in the kitchen — not big enough for both my lunch AND my laptop, I’ve forced myself to eat without working. Taking my lunch back to my computer feels inefficient so, instead, I just perch right there sans computer. This made me think…we have to create our spaces to guide the routine we want. Remove the barriers — or put them up — when you want to change the way your day unfolds. Don’t put your dining room across the house from the kitchen if you want to use it. Don’t put a TV in your bedroom if you want to end the day with a book. Create a conversational layout if you want to entertain in the living room. Put a bar in the family room if you want to start a Friday night cocktail hour.
