Genuine question for my mom friends: when you get a text that’s heartfelt, long, or clearly thought out, do you ever not respond because a quick reply feels like it’s not enough?

I do this constantly…I’ll read a meaningful text and think “this deserves a real response,” and then weeks go by because I never find that block of time. Does the silence end up sending a worse message than just replying short? Would you rather get a quick “❤️” right away, or a longer response even if it takes weeks?

3 REFRAMES TO GET YOUR CHILD TALKING 🙌🏼

And did you notice what they all have in common? They GIVE CHOICES!

Giving choices does 3 things:

1. Encourages more elaborate responses: Yes/no questions can be answered with a head nod (which is ok but not super helpful when learning new words) and offering choices prompts your child to use more specific words or even short phrases!

2. Supports vocabulary development: When you consistently name the items you’re offering (“blue cup or red cup?”), you’re exposing your child to repeated, meaningful vocabulary in context. This helps with word learning and retention because they hear and use the words during real interactions.

3. Reduces communication pressure: Giving two options is less overwhelming than open-ended questions like “What do you want?” It’s a scaffolded way to support expressive language in children who are still learning to talk.

Have you given choices to your toddler before and how did it go?
