Is a data career still worth pursuing in the age of AI?

I analyze U.S job posting data across 5 different career paths, 19 tools, and 8 fast rising AI terms, and cross-checked the findings against current industry research.

Three things that stood out:
1. The core skills remain SQL, Python, Tableau, and Excel.
2. AI is expanding from simple question-answering into retrieval and agentic workflow.
3. Data science is still projected to grow strongly through 2034.

My key takeaway: don’t abandon the fundamentals to chase every new AI trend if you are serious about a career in data science.

Some of the reasons why using a cheaper AI model may not end up being cheaper overall. When I was at Claude code’s birthday event, Boris- the creator of Claude Code, said to always use the most advanced model with maximum thinking. Do you agree?
In school, you’re being evaluated on whether you understand something. In the workplace, you’re being evaluated on what you are capable of doing.

One of the biggest pitfalls when you’re building a data science portfolio right after graduation is treating it like another school assignment.

Here are 6 ways AI can bring more of that real-world thinking into your data science portfolio projects:

✔️ Find relevant, usable data faster
✔️ Turn a broad idea into a project you can realistically finish
✔️ Introduce stakeholder constraints and tradeoffs
✔️ Work through coding problems when you get stuck
✔️ Pressure-test your analysis and conclusions
✔️ Turn the project into a strong case study and portfolio website

Your ownership shows up in the decisions you make: what you ask, what you verify, what you change, and what you ultimately choose to represent.

If you want a structured way to learn this, Google AI Professional Certificate on @coursera covers practical applications across research, data analysis, responsible AI use, vibe coding, and app building.

A career pivot becomes easier when you stop treating it like a total restart.

1. Choose a role instead of a field.
“Data,” “tech,” and “marketing” are too broad. Pick a specific role so you can identify the work, skills, and proof employers expect.

2. Reverse-engineer the market.
Review 15–20 current job postings. Track the responsibilities and skills that repeat; those are your priorities. Treat one-off requirements as preferences, not your entire curriculum.

3. Separate skill gaps from language gaps.
You may already solve problems, work with stakeholders, improve processes, or interpret information. Rewrite that experience as problem → action → result instead of listing duties.

4. Use your current industry as your entry point.
Changing industries and functions simultaneously creates a bigger leap. Your knowledge of healthcare, retail, finance, or hospitality can make you more credible in a related role.

5. Build a bridge project.
Create something resembling a real deliverable in your target role. Use a realistic problem, explain your decisions, and finish with a recommendation—not just a polished final product.

6. Find work with small but real stakes.
Volunteer, support an internal project, freelance, or help someone in your network. A defined problem, deadline, and outcome creates stronger evidence than another certificate.

7. Create a clear pivot story.
Explain where you’ve been, what transfers, why you’re changing direction, and what you’ve done to prepare. If someone can’t easily repeat your story, your positioning is still too complicated.

8. Treat applications like an experiment.
Apply in small batches and track the results. No interviews may signal a résumé problem; interviews without offers may signal a storytelling or skills gap.

9. Decide what makes leaving financially safe.
Set a clear threshold: an offer, a savings target, or a consistent interview pipeline. Feeling finished with your current career is a reason to build a plan, not always a reason to quit tomorrow.

Save this if you’re preparing for a career pivot.
