When I posted something related to thermometers in my stories, most of you mentioned still using rectal until 3-4 years old! Although that is ok and accurate, it may be a bit traumatizing to an older toddler.

Here’s the breakdown:

☑️ For infants under 3 months - rectal is the gold standard. It gives you the most accurate reading, and at this age, accuracy really matters. A degree off could mean the difference between monitoring at home, calling the pediatrician, or even going to the ER.

☑️After 3 months, an axillary (armpit) thermometer works well. Just make sure the whole tip is covered, the arm is pressed against the chest, and there’s nothing between the skin and the thermometer. If you ever doubt the temperature, take a rectal.

☑️After 6 months, you can start using an ear (tympanic) or forehead (temporal) thermometers.

• Tympanic ones are great for a quick reading, but there’s a bit of a learning curve since it has to point toward the eardrum, and earwax can throw the numbers off a bit.

• Forehead thermometers measure core temp through the temporal artery, but room temperature and sunlight can affect the reading.

☑️After 4 years old, you can start using an oral thermometer. These should be saved for kids that are old enough to actually keep the tip under their tongue.
