I’ve held off on posting this for over a year because I wanted to be sure I could share it for educational purposes rather than to shame these people (although they are definitely in the wrong in many ways). Here’s is a break down on what they did wrong, my hope is those who have never been to grizzly country can learn from their mistakes.

For starters, the pair are within 100 yards (even within 50 yards) of three grizzly bears. They should’ve stayed in their car and watched from inside safely. It’s okay to have windows rolled down while watching. Their car was parked all the way off the road, so I’ll give them that.

Next, the pair turned their back on three bears who had already been behaving unpredictably. Turning your back on any wild animal is never a good idea, especially at such a close distance. Grizzlies can run 35mph, and with their back turned these people would have had zero time to react. Never turn your backs on wildlife.

Last and probably the most importantly, they ignored the animals’ body language. All three bears repeatedly looked in their direction while they grazed. The bears had also been acting unpredictably prior to this. You don’t have to be an expert in animal behavior to pick up on continued staring. These bears were young, curious, and bold.

Like I said, I want this to be used to educate. I understand wanting to get a photo of the bears, but they should have remained in the car and patiently waited for the bears to safely walk past.

If you see anyone breaking rules or placing themselves in unsafe situations, please use your voice and politely, but urgently, explain to them why that’s a bad idea. Kindness can go a long way in getting people to listen. If they continue, report them to the necessary authorities.

managing coexistence

When a bison jam happens, rangers aren’t just managing the bison; they’re managing the people, too. Their goal is to keep stubborn bison from standing in the roadway, help them cross as efficiently as possible, and make sure visitors aren’t stopping in the middle of the road.

While it can look a little intense, keeping bison moving helps prevent them from getting trapped between lines of vehicles or lingering on the road where they’re at greater risk of being hit by a car.

At the end of the day, it’s all about finding the balance between protecting wildlife and safely managing the thousands of people who come Yellowstone, something I think the park service does very well. Thank you to every ranger who helps protect all our national parks.

This bison rut is almost here, when bulls fight each other for mating rights and act very aggressively and unpredictably. During the rut several years back, these two bulls were challenging each other before the fight broke out, with loud bellows and grunts ringing across the valley. The force at which they pushed each other around was incredible.

The aggression is fueled by increased levels of testosterone, making them even more unpredictable and dangerous. I’m sure everyone has seen the video of the man who was recently attacked by a bison, a powerful reminder of their aggression this time of year. The man did nothing to provoke the bison and was keeping a respectful distance. I hope he has a full recovery and knows it was not his fault despite the unfortunate circumstances and level of criticism he’s received online.

Remain 25 yards or more away from bison, or view safely from your car parked in a pullout or all the way off the road.

I photographed this large grizzly as he made his way through a trailhead parking area back in April. The moment he walked behind the grizzly bear sign couldn’t have been more fitting and a simple reminder that these rules exist for a reason. When bears and people share the same space, respecting those guidelines helps keep everyone safe. Properly storing food and trash, staying aware of your surroundings, and carrying bear spray are just a few of the ways to be prepared when visiting grizzly country.
