During one of our visits to New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns National Park, on the Lower Cave tour, our ranger guide mentioned how diverse all the NPS sites are. She said, “Our national park landscapes include mountains, deserts, beaches, canyons and caves, and you should find the park that speaks to you.” If you want to find out if Carlsbad Caverns speaks to you in the same way it does to Karen, here are a few things to know. First, be sure to get on recreation.gov ahead of time to get your general timed entry reservation. The Big Room: this is a self-guided tour through the largest cave chamber in North America. A 1.25-mile paved loop trail will take you through the chamber that Karen describes as one of the most magical, fantastical places she’s ever seen. Access: Visitors can reach the Big Room by hiking down through the steep Natural Entrance or by taking an elevator directly from the visitor center. The hike down is 1.25 miles with 750 feet of elevation change. We like to hike down (lots of amazing things to see on the way) and then take the elevator back up. Environment: The cave has a steady year-round temperature of around 56°F with high humidity, so bring a jacket. Ranger-led tours: the Lower Cave tour is offered on Wednesdays, be sure to buy your tickets in advance on Recreation.gov. The King’s Palace Tour is offered when staffing levels permit, inquire when you check in at the visitor center. Bat Flight Program: if you’re visiting in April through October do not miss the chance to see hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiraling out of the cave. No tickets or reservations are needed. The program begins with a ranger talk shortly before sunset at the natural cave entrance amphitheater. Lodging: the town of Carlsbad, New Mexico has a lot of lodging options and chain hotels. Don’t miss Guadalupe Mountains Brewery for some good beer and pizza. Have you been to Carlsbad Caverns yet? The National Park Service just celebrated its 110th anniversary. 🎉 Its mission is to preserve the current 433 NPS sites for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Back when we first visited all 63 U.S. “National Parks” we made the rookie mistake of thinking those were the only NPS sites worth seeing, and we missed out on hundreds of really remarkable places. Since then we’ve made it our mission to seek out every NPS site close to where we happen to be traveling, and we’ve explored some really amazing ones. These park units (433 in all) showcase geological and cultural treasures, highlight historic events, and have some really incredible recreational activities.
