Hey, I’m Janel! Introducing myself as I approach 70k followers!

I spent 12 years as an HR manager at NBCUniversal, Tinder, and Stitch Fix. Now, I’m a work psychologist (with a masters from LSE) and career strategist with an audience of 156K, hired by companies like LinkedIn and Glassdoor to talk about the future of work.

But getting here was chaotic! I zigzagged from corporate to solopreneurship (twice…) before building a portfolio career that fits who I am now. As a rule-following millennial Good Girl, every pivot left me worrying: “What’s wrong with me?”

Now I think pivots are one of the strongest career moves you can make.

My substack @readgoingplaces is for the ones who did everything right, from the color-coded planners to the unpaid internships to the “exceeds expectations” reviews, but still don’t feel like they’ve “made it.”

Here, I built the bridge from career confusion to inspired action, sharing the frameworks and success stories behind 200+ career pivots and flexible careers (including my own!) to help you get there.

If this note found you, tell me: what’s the career question that keeps you up at night?
Here’s the career advice I needed at 24, not 34:

Your path doesn’t have to be linear, the “bridge” job is still
teaching you something, and a 1:1 coach is a cheat code for
clarity and progress.

That last one is exactly what @waldenuniversity builds into
every degree — a 1:1 Career Coach in your corner from day
one through your job search (and beyond).

If you’ve been sitting on a “one day,” this might be what turns
it into day one. Comment “Walden” to learn more

Comment “HIGH PERFORMER” to read the full Substack @readgoingplaces , because I have thoughtsssss....

If you can relate to ever saying, “I don’t understand, I’ve always gotten amazing feedback, and now I’m ‘not meeting expectations?!’” keeping reading.

One quarter you’re the person leadership points to in the all-hands. The next, you’re in a meeting being told your work has “concerns” nobody flagged before, with a 30-to-90-day clock attached and language vague enough that you can’t actually tell what “success” would even look like.

The word “gaslighting” gets thrown around too liberally these days, but I personally believe that putting a high-performer on a PIP and pointing to arbitrary new goals is a form of corporate gaslighting.
