What’s in Season with a Veggie Scientist 👩🏻‍🌾🫐🥭

🍓Sweetest Batch raspberries
If you want sweet, juicy raspberries, this is what you’re going to do. You’re going to look for the Sweetest Batch variety from a brand called @driscolls.anz. I’ve actually been to the farms these are grown on and these ones are super sweet!! They’re a different variety to the standard raspberries which are sometimes too sour for me, if you want the best tasting raspberries in Australia this is the variety to go for!!

🥭Mangoes
Early season mangoes are starting to appear everything, I’m so excited for them to keep coming!

🌱Asparagus
These bad boys are from Koo Wee Rup, Victoria, so only about 50 mins from Melbourne and they’re great fried with oil and garlic. Super yummy and fresh from the farm.

🫐 Blueberries
Blueberries are especially affordable at this time of year, excellent quality and really good value overall for those blueberry lovers amongst us!
It’s strawberry season! And you know what that means, we’re checking out a strawberry farm! 🍓🍓🍓🍓

Say hello to our next Red Basket VIP - The Strawberry!

We spent a day with Laura, a real-life strawberry farmer, to see what it actually takes to grow these little fruits.

🍓 Laura’s strawberries are grown on table tops. This growing system keeps the plants off the ground, which has helped to improve their overall plant health so they can produce great-tasting fruits.

🍓 Strawberry plants have every stage of their life cycle growing at once. They’re basically tiny strawberry factories running 24/7 during peak season!

🍓 Laura also showed us the right way to harvest a strawberry. You need to snap it from the stem and avoid touching the fruit itself, since pressure from our hands can bruise its delicate flesh. Also, every single strawberry is hand-harvested here!

🍓 And she answered the all-important question, where to store our strawberries once we bring them home. Keep them in the fridge, in the punnet they came in, and give them a wash just before you eat them. That’s it!

Who will be our next Red Basket VIP? 👀 #ad

Cool Girls Guide to Chocolate Pudding Fruit aka the Black Sapote🍫

Hands down this has been one of the weirdest fruit experiences of my life to date. I am not being over-dramatic, this fruit actually doesn’t taste like a fruit. A few things worth noting about this lovely fruit

🍫 It’s a persimmon!
Black sapote (Diospyros nigra) is in the same family as your regular persimmon. It’s native to Mexico and Central America, and in Australia is usually grown in Far North Queensland

🍫 You have to wait for it to look busted before you eat it! That’s when it’ll be perfectly ripe. Firm and green = bitter and awful. You want the skin dull, olive-brown and slightly wrinkled, flesh soft enough to scoop. If it looks like you should’ve eaten it three days ago, it’s ready.

🍫 The Black Sapote actually has more vitamin C than an orange. Roughly 2–4x, depending on the fruit. Not bad for something that tastes like you’re eating a dessert.

🍫 To eat it chop it in half and scoop out the flesh, you can also mix it up with coconut milk for a fluffy treat!

Okay enjoy Cool Girls and let me know what I should do next!! 🍫👩🏻‍🌾😎👋💅
