This is part 2 of teaching your dog to walk by your side (aka “heel” or whatever you’d like to call it) I have my treat pouch behind my back so my dog isn’t paying attention to it when walking, and so I can reward farther back (that’s better for keeping them from trying to walk slightly ahead of you). If your dog makes a mistake at any point, reset and try again. If they continue to make the same mistake- go back a step or two (you probably went too fast through the steps). If you want to get your dog walking nicely by your side in “heel”, you need to start by teaching them the position you want them to be in! This is the first step to teaching your dog the “heel” command on walks, in busy places and around distractions. Stay tuned for part 2 where we put it in motion!! Note: I use “side” in this video to mean “heel”, this is just the word I use- you can use heel, side, with me, etc but be consistent!

I know this probably feels like a lot of steps- heck, there are THREE steps before you even leave your house! But if you want to set your dog up for the BEST possible walk, these are the steps you should take to do that. Keep in mind, you’re asking your dog a LOT for calmness on a walk. There are squirrels, other barking dogs, cars, strollers, smells, people… the list goes on, and your dog is FIGHTING every single instinct to walk calmly with you and ignore those things. If you expect your dog to do ALL that work, but you can’t be bothered to take a few extra steps to help them, that’s just not fair to them. If you want effort from your dog, you need to put in effort too- you should only expect to get OUT of your dog, what you’re willing to put IN.
