Discipline doesn’t always have to sound like, “what were you thinking?!” sometimes it sounds like, “tell me what happened.” when I saw a student make a motion like they were going to throw a pencil, I could have immediately accused them of throwing it and sent them straight into consequences. instead, I asked questions. because middle schoolers are still learning how to make good choices, communicate, manage impulses, and take responsibility for their actions. that doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences when they’re needed. It means I want to understand what happened BEFORE I decide what the consequence should be. After 13 years teaching science, I’ve learned you don’t need expensive supplies for hands-on learning.
