Quinn is my soul dog, plain and simple.

I know that phrase gets thrown around a lot, but I don’t say it lightly. This clip is from a training session, working on her walking in a middle. Nothing exciting was happening. No treats, no big reward waiting, just an ordinary moment with a dog who didn’t need a reason to stay locked in with me.

I think a lot of people assume the deepest bond with a dog shows up in the big moments. The reunions, the rescues, the dramatic before and afters. But honestly, for me it’s the opposite. It’s in the mundane stuff. The repetitive training reps. The quiet walks with nothing to post. The moments where she has every reason to be distracted and just isn’t, because she’d rather be locked in on me than anything else going on around her.

If you’ve ever had a dog like that, you know exactly what I mean. It’s not something you can really explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it. It just is what it is, and once you feel it, you can’t unfeel it.

Send this to someone whose dog is their soul dog too, they’ll know exactly what you mean.
Before she was Ivy, she was Destiny. That was the name a rescue in Texas gave her the day she was pulled out of a dog fighting ring with three other dogs, all of them neglected, underweight, and chained outside.

She’d already been adopted and returned three times by the time she found us. Nobody wanted to put in the work a dog like her needed.

Four years later, she has a whole side of the bed. She doesn’t wait for permission anymore. She just takes it.

Rehabilitating a reactive rescue dog isn’t linear and it isn’t fast, but this is what the other side looks like. Save this if you’re in the middle of it with your own dog. It gets better.
People will call an entire breed dangerous, aggressive, unpredictable, without ever meeting a single one of them. Meanwhile Scarlet just jumped up on my husband and started wiggling her whole body like she was asking him to dance.

He didn’t even flinch. This is just a normal day for us.

Could you imagine hating her when all she wants is love? Scarlet is a 60 pound velcro dog who wants affection every second of the day and has zero concept of personal space.

Send this to someone who could use a reason to trust the breed a little more.
My neighborhood spent almost two weeks trying to catch her. Everyone was posting about her on Facebook, everyone wanted to help, but she wasn’t ready for any of it yet.

She was scared. Broken spirited. The kind of scared that comes from someone actually hurting you, not just being lost.

A friend finally cornered her behind the church by my house. Mario bathed her, fed her, sat with her until I walked through the door and it was already done.

That’s when we realized she was still lactating. She’d had puppies somewhere, recently, and there was no trace of them anywhere. We believe she was used by a backyard breeder to profit off her litters and dumped the second she wasn’t useful anymore. It happens constantly where we used to live.

We even tried to rehome her once, thinking it was the right thing to do. It didn’t work. Mario went and got her back.

Someone profited off her body and threw her away. I get to spend every day with what they gave up.
