Tteok or Korean Rice Cakes, Pt. 1 There are many fun varieties of tteok to try! Many Korean grocery stores will sell these in the prepared food section but there are also specialty rice cake stores that will sell a larger variety and also do catering orders for special Korean ceremonies in which tteok is traditionally presented. Here are the varieties shown in this Pt. 1 video: 1. Injeolmi: rectangular and coated typically in a roasted soybean powder (sometimes powdered mugwort is used). It has a very nutty flavor. 2. Tteokbokki tteok: the standard skinnier cylindrical tteok that you eat in tteokbokki 3. Garaetteok: these thicker cylindrical tteok are versatile and can be roasted, cut into coins and used in soups, or also added to tteokbokki 4. Jeongpyeon or sultteok: these are made with “makgeolli” or Korean rice wine. This tteok has a slightly sweet and tangy aroma from the rice wine and has a fluffier texture. These are usually topped with some delicate sprinkles of black sesame, pine nuts, or sliced jujubes. 5. Sirutteok: this tteok is a little layered with roughly chopped or crushed red beans. Because of the larger bean pieces, the texture is different than other tteok (more like the texture of cookies & cream). It’s not as sweet as some of the other tteoks and definitely less sweet than some of the red bean desserts you may have tried. 6. Jeolpyeon: these are a slightly denser tteok that can be stamped with a special design or patterned with stripes. They are brushed with a very light coating of sesame oil.
