“I had postpartum (depression? OCD? Anxiety? Rage? Psychosis? A time period???) and I never thought of harming my children.”

Something that has shocked me (or maybe not) about the recent dialogue surrounding maternal mental illness is other’s lack of ability to think outside of their own experience. Women who have given birth but not experienced the depths of despair mental illness can bring you to. Non-birthing people who have no right to comment on the postpartum experience at all, TBH.

I mean, I’ve never had a heart attack, but believe people who have.

And perhaps I wouldn’t have this compassion had I not had a taste of Postpartum Mood Disorders and Panic Disorder myself. Before my Panic Disorder brought me to the brink of agoraphobia in my mid-twenties and my PPD brought me nights of sobbing in terror I couldn’t explain, maybe I would have said “I couldn’t imagine…”, too.

But that’s the purpose of sharing and listening to those who share. There are enough stories out there to pop our finite bubbles of thought if we let them.
