Keiks Makes: turning a cardboard box into a whimsical swan boat costume, part 2!

My first Halloween costume is coming along! 🦢 I used corrugated cardboard from our bathroom renovation & pr packages to build out the body of the swan without adding a ton of weight. It’s a bit tedious but very easy to do — especially when you have @retrorecipeskitchen helping with the cuts.

I already edited the third episode so I’ll have that up for you tomorrow. Let’s just say: sometimes, I hate myself. 🙃😩

Keiks Makes: Making a whimsical cardboard swan boat costume, part 1. 🦢 I’m trying something a little different here, so I would love your feedback! Do you like seeing behind the scenes of my DIYs? Or does it take away from the magic?

Social media can make it look like big projects are done in 60 seconds, but I usually work on my Halloween costumes for weeks and sometimes months at a time, between other projects. I usually just show the end result or a quick time lapse unless it’s a full tutorial, but I thought I’d try something different and show the process as I go because it can be such a bummer to work really hard on a project that peaks at 24 hours and then virtually disappears!

I’ve been saving cardboard boxes, chipboard, newspaper, foil, and other “garbage” for my costumes and then fleshing them out with paper mache, clay, and thrifted fabrics. For this particular project, I did have to buy insulation boards for the neck, nylon straps, and some spray paint, but everything else was either already in my craft stash or intercepted on its way to the trash.

I’m almost done with final touches as I type this, and I’m really happy with how it turned out — so please stay tuned for more!

I used to be nervous to show behind the scenes, because how can I show you how to do something when I’m just figuring it out, myself? The truth is, it’s often trial and error; it’s a whole lot of mess and mistakes that I clean up along the way and keep on going. I just have an idea of what I want to do, and I figure it out along the way. Maybe that’s why I love creating so much: it’s just about the only time I throw caution to the wind. 😉

When Viva asked me to create something, they didn’t require that I use their Signature Cloth towels. But I already use them so much in my creations that I wanted to incorporate them into the piece itself. They’re soft, absorbent, and cloth-like — and have this pliable stretch that makes it feel like draping a piece cut on the bias. It makes it perfect for curves when doing paper mache. Bonus: it’s also great for cleanup.

It’s that time of the year, when I have more ideas than I have time — but I can do it all! Or at least…I can try.
