This is the Tour du Mont Blanc, one of the most iconic multi-day treks on the planet. Over the course of 10 days, we hiked through France 🇫🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, and Switzerland🇨🇭, skirting around Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in the European Union 🏔️ Along the way, you get jaw-dropping views of the Alps, ancient glaciers, adorable mountain towns, and SO much good food 🥐🫕🍕

Here’s what you need to know about the TMB 👇🏼

😴 You can either camp in campgrounds or stay at hotels or mountain refuges along the way. We did it hut-to-hut, meaning we didn’t have to carry heavy camping gear AND the refuges fed us!

🗓️ It’s a POPULAR hike, so hotels and refuges along the trail typically book up as soon as the dates are released on October 15 for the following year.

🚠 Hiking the TMB can be tough (you climb the equivalent of Mount Everest’s elevation 🫠), but there are buses and gondolas if you need shortcuts. We met people, ranging from 17 to their 70s on the trail!

Hiking 100 miles through France, Italy, and Switzerland 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇨🇭

This is the Tour du Mont Blanc, one of the most popular multi-day treks on the planet, which circumnavigates the tallest mountain in Europe🏔️ Over the course of several days (we did it in 10, but we met people doing it in anywhere from 6-14 days!), you hike 105 miles and climb 34,000 feet through the Alps, passing glaciers, charming villages, and lots of cute cows 🐄

You can camp or stay at hotels along the way, but the most popular option (and the way we did it!) was by hiking it hut-to-hut, staying at cozy mountain refuges along the way (meaning you don’t need to bring tents or other heavy camping supplies) 🏨

These refuges usually feed you dinner and breakfast, so you really just need to worry about lunch, which you can pick up at grocery stores or small restaurants during your hike. Honestly, the food is one of the most fun parts of the trail, trying different cuisines as you make your way around Mont Blanc 🥐🍝🫕

There’s only a small window to hike it (from July through mid-September), so the trail is definitely on the busier side and refuges tend to book up almost a year in advance of each hiking season. But, if you don’t mind planning, this is seriously one of the coolest and most unique hiking experiences we’ve done!

The hike itself is definitely tough, but we met people of all shapes and ages on the trail. There’s actually lots of ways to make this doable for most hikers, including buses 🚌, gondolas 🚠, and even luggage transfer services 🎒

The best wildlife experiences along Highway One 🌊🦦

California’s Highway One, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is one of our all-time favorite road trips, offering 656 miles of stunning coastline 🚗 Along the way, there are so many opportunities to spot some of the Golden State’s incredible wildlife, ranging from blue whales (the largest animal on the planet!) to one of the smallest fox species in the world 🦊

Here are some of our favorite spots to see wildlife along Highway One👇🏼

🦌 Tomales Point Trail in Point Reyes National Seashore, near San Francisco. You hike right through a reserve for tule elk, which are the smallest elk species in North America and only found in California.

🦭 Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, near San Simeon. Up to 25,000 of these weirdly adorable creatures head to this beach each year, where they come to breed, raise their young, and make LOTS of funky noises.

🦦 Elkhorn Slough, near Monterey Bay. Here, you can kayak with the densest population of southern sea otters on the planet, plus see lots of other cuties, like harbor seals, sea lions, and seabirds.

🦊 Channel Islands National Park (i.e., the “Galapagos of North America”), near Ventura. Because of its isolated location, the park is home to 145 plant and animal species that are found nowhere else on the planet, including the island fox and the island scrubjay.

We spent several weeks driving Highway One, but I’m sure we still missed lots of cool stuff—are there any wildlife experiences that you enjoyed along the California coast? 🫍

When a tiny town is worth the 46 hour train ride🚂

Before our first trip to Churchill, Manitoba 🇨🇦, I remember our Airbnb host messaged us and said “We look forward to welcoming you to our quirky, little town, full of magical creatures.”

And that’s exactly what Churchill is—a teeny town on the edge of the Hudson Bay, surrounded by beluga whales in the summer, polar bears in the fall, and all kinds of other critters, like Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and caribou, throughout the year 🐻‍❄️🐋

Beyond its magical creatures, Churchill feels special because it’s so hard to reach. There aren’t any roads that lead to the town so the only way to get here is either via an expensive flight from Winnipeg ✈️ or a loooong train ride 🚂 (pro tip—on our second visit, we drove 8 hours north of Winnipeg to the city of Thompson and took the train from there instead, which cuts the ride down to *just* 16 hours).

And because it’s so hard to reach, you wind up seeing the same people again and again on your tours and as you explore the town, like some kind of adult version of summer camp ⛺️—just with a side of magical creatures!

Would you take a 46 hour train to experience Churchill? 🇨🇦
