Been waiting to do this one for a while! The Hasidic community in Williamsburg is one of the city’s largest and most dynamic ethnic enclaves, but it’s notoriously insular and, understandably, camera-shy at times given the antisemitic harassment the community has faced, especially in recent months.

This year marked 25 years since 9/11, and a lot of people said this anniversary felt particularly solemn. I felt it too, namely because so many New Yorkers were affected that day- nearly 3,000 people killed, including hundreds of first responders, and countless friends and family members that hold their losses so heavy still.

But there’s another story that gets told less often: in the years after the attacks, New Yorkers in Muslim neighborhoods lived in genuine fear under years of surveillance, much of it aimed at people who’d done absolutely nothing but come to New York and the U.S. for a better life.
