The Penn State Obelisk (also called the “polylith”) was built in 1896, the very same year the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (then the School of Mines) was founded. 🪨

It stands 32.7 feet tall, weighs 53.4 tons, and was built by State College stonemason Michael Womer using 281 blocks of stone from 139 different locations, mostly right here in PA!

It wasn’t just decorative. The college was getting so many questions about local stone that Professor Magnus Ihlseng, Penn State’s first professor of Mining Engineering and Geology, decided to build the answer. He wanted architects, quarrymen, students, and visitors to be able to study Pennsylvania’s building stones and their durability in one place. At the time, it was the single biggest expense of the college’s whole year: $708.09.

The stones are stacked in actual geologic order, from precambrian rock (the oldest in the state) at the bottom to triassic rock, formed during the age of the dinosaurs, at the top.

It’s been standing through all of it since: horses and buggies on Allen Street, the train pulling out for Bellefonte, Penn Staters orbiting in the space shuttle. Still here, still telling the story!
