Ya gotta start at the foundation ‼️ The biggest mistake I made when treating plantar fasciitis as a new grad PT 7 years ago was starting with calf raises. While yes, calf raises are coming in parts 2 & 3, if you don’t make sure the foot intrinsics are strong, they won’t be as effective!

So, we start with toe yoga 🤸‍♀️

Some notes:

✨ your big toe can take up to 40% of force when walking, running, & jumping, so think about where that force is redistributed if it’s weak 👀

✨ really pressing the big toe into the ground when you lift the other toes (while not pronating!!) is essential to foot and ankle stability and will carry over to functional movements like squatting and single leg stance aka your hip muscles fire better when the foot/ankle complex is stable

✨ keeping your ankle and knee still will keep you from cheating with this one & will make the exercise much more effective

✨ your feet need to be on a flat surface aka doing this is bed won’t work!

✨ this series can also help with bunions 🦶

We are just doing our best over here 😅😅😅

My unsolicited advice:
1. Rely on your village.
2a. Do one small thing every day that moves the needle towards your goal. Can be tiny tiny (send an email, make a phone call, make a list, research your next step).
2b. Say your dream out loud daily. Talk about it with your partner, your bff, a stranger in the store. Speak that sh*t into existence.

Then tell me how it goes 😉

Tell me them dreams in the comments!!

When most people hear “pelvic floor” they think Kegels. But, the pelvic floor is a postural and stabilizing muscle group- aka part of a system & not just muscle group used for isolated contractions.

This means that these muscles not only need to be reactive (aka squeeze when ya jump or sneeze) but they need to be able to absorb force (aka support you from the bottom up, activate in different directions at different angles, adjust quickly to force changes, tolerate multiple sneezes and jumping many times in a row, etc.)‼️💪🏻

Isometric = muscle working + position held + little/no movement. When the body is loaded with an isometric force, the core should engage aka the pelvic floor should absorb that force & help the trunk and lower extremities stabilize.

The skinny: Training isometrics helps load the pelvic floor, trains it to absorb force, and tells your stabilizing musculature to fire when you need it- all to help obtain optimal pressure control.

This can help with:
✨ stress urinary incontinence
✨ pelvic heaviness and/or prolapse
✨ diastasis recti and abdominal doming/coning
✨ hormone induced muscle atrophy (peri- and post- menopausal)
✨ improved core activation or athletes
✨ joint pain, especially hip and low back pain!!

Some notes:
✨ If you aren’t using a squat rack, you will need something that does NOT stretch (like a belt or luggage strap) or has a ton of resistance (the heaviest pull-up assistance band)
✨exhale and engage your TA and pelvic floor when you are resisting the force to start and then work up to maintaining this hold while breathing normally but keeping the pelvic floor engaged
✨ I like to progress this to more dynamic moves with jumping followed by holding the isometric position- especially with my athletes 🏃🏽‍♀️
✨ the idea here is to NOT hold your breath‼️

Should I do a full guide on this to go into more detail? Let me know in the comments!!
