the real magic
If you’re curious to learn about the sustainability standards of individual hostels, then one of the best things I’ve found is to check-out the “sustainability rating” of different stays on Hostel World!!

As for this hostel in particular….well it’s one of my favorites in London @palmerslodge.uk I’ve stayed here countless times and absolutely love everything about it!! The people are wonderful, it’s beautiful, and they truly do make a lot of effort to be more sustainable!

So yeah, check out hostels if you haven’t already and research what eco-conscious efforts they have in place!

No microplastics.
No deforestation.
No false recycling.

Most importantly — NO greenwashing.

I couldn’t find something that met my standards. I couldn’t find a brand that didn’t rely on some sort of false claims or over exaggeration of how “clean” and “sustainable” they were.

Over 95% of cosmetics CANNOT be recycled and end up in landfills. Nearly all of them plastic (aka drilled and pumped from the ground and then highly processed to create polymer chains that are bound to outlive us for hundreds of years).

Plastic may have its place, but it should not be single-use, unrecyclable, and destined for landfills — or worse… polluting the soil and oceans.

It’s 2026. It’s time we designed more innovative solutions that don’t rely so much on exploiting the place we all call home.

If you feel guilty for keeping old makeup, that’s normal. It’s normal to feel like throwing away beautiful packaging is a waste, and that’s because it is!!

What’s NOT normal is how decencitized we have become to throwing packaging away. Nearly all cosmetic packaging today is single-use, destined for landfills, and when we have hundreds of products to choose from at huge chain stores like Sephora, or even our corner drugstores, or Amazon, well, we forget that all that packaging we purchase doesn’t just “disappear” because it was thrown away or “recycled”. It stays on the planet. It pollutes the land, it finds its way into rivers, oceans, and even breaks down into millions of microplastics and seeps into our soil.

So yes, it’s normal to feel we need to “hoard” all of these precious beautiful bottles and tubes that are often works of art. Because the truth is, there is almost nothing better to do with them. Almost no company takes account for the waste they generate and unfortunately over 95% of cosmetic packaging ends up in landfills, never recycled because it’s contaminated with makeup residue or it’s simply made with too many materials that it’s hard to separate and turn into anything new.

So, long story short, the cosmetic industry (and most material industries in general) are incredibly wasteful, and the majority of that waste comes from packaging, so @shelliour is my attempt at trying to solve at least one small piece of the puzzle. To try and create products that were never meant to become waste in the first place
