Seven weeks ago Mykhailo Fedorov was running Ukraine’s defense ministry. On Monday he announced his own defense tech company — still in stealth — with Palantir CEO Alex Karp stepping up as first lead investor.

His track record: youngest minister in Ukraine’s history, the Starlink tweet to Musk that armed a country in days, then Defense Minister — where he launched the Brave1 Dataroom with Palantir and TrophyLab, the platform cataloguing captured Russian hardware for allies. He was pushed out 26 days after TrophyLab went live.

My read: defense tech pulled in $14.6 billion in five months, but capital isn’t the constraint — founders with real battlefield experience and AI hardware depth are. Wars are minting them right now.

He will not be the last.

Tim Cook’s first day as CEO: August 24, 2011, Apple worth $348 billion, and the entire world convinced nobody could follow Steve Jobs.

His last day: Apple touched $5 trillion in July, total shareholder return of 2,162% per Apple’s own proxy. No single Jobs-level product — just Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Silicon, and a $120 billion services business. The operator won.

Now John Ternus takes over, and the profile is reversed: 25 years in hardware engineering, worked under Jobs, shipped the iPhone Air. Apple is betting the next era needs a builder — while facing an AI gap, a memory crunch, an onshoring deadline, and OpenAI building hardware with Jony Ive.

September 9, we find out if “he got game.”

GoPro is merging with Starman Optical — a photonics company making optical transceivers, the components that move data inside AI data centers. Shareholders get $285 million at $1.14 a share, keep about 10% of the combined company, and the $92 million of debt gets wiped. The stock jumped 38%.

Markiplier filed passive two weeks ago. Woodman controls two-thirds of the vote. So the largest individual shareholder found out with the rest of us.

That said — he paid roughly $9 million and his stake pays out around $15 million at closing. Wrong on control, right on price.

The bigger pattern: dying hardware brands with clean Nasdaq listings are becoming vehicles for the AI buildout. The shells are wearing famous names.

Did EY just accidentally build the compensation model for the AI era?

The program: a $100 million bonus pool across EY’s US firm, paying for judgment, adaptability, and business acumen. $500 spot awards. $10,000 to $25,000 for measurable change — five times their old ceiling.

My read: a salary is a recurring payment for recurring work, and AI is eating the recurring work. What’s left is episodic — the catch, the call, the thing nobody prompted. So pay goes episodic too. Low base, bounties per problem, and a premium for being the accountable human. A model can’t be held liable. A person can.

EY didn’t announce that future. But they may have just priced it.
