On 16th December 1775, only 5km from Whitchurch Silk Mill, Jane Austen was born. Jane grew up in the small village of Steventon, living there until 1801. After some time in Bath, Jane then returned to Hampshire in 1809, living in Chawton until 1817.

Today marks 250 years since Jane's birth; a reminder of her endless inspiration. Growing up in rural Hampshire had a profound effect on Jane's imagination, and it's said that her countryside upbringing influenced many of her stories. Visit Whitchurch Silk Mill and you might even feel your own literary inspirations flow! 🖋️

To celebrate #JA250, we've been weaving a gorgeous silk using the designs from our @janeaustenshouse collaboration ribbons. In this collaboration, we took inspiration from the collection at Jane Austen's Chawton home, such as her writing table and first edition novels. 'The Austen' scarf incorporates each design in a timeless masterpiece, using the traditional techniques and machinery found here at the Mill.

When weaving a silk cloth, the silk travels through the loom, from the warp beam on one side to the cloth beam on the other. Once a determined length has been woven on the loom, it is then cut and unrolled onto a third beam. Here, our Heritage Weaving Manager shows the beam frame in action, efficiently moving the freshly-woven cloth from beam to beam.

If you like the look of this silk, why not make it yours? We're weaving 'The Austen' to celebrate 250 years of Jane Austen, with a limited first release already available on our website! Don't miss your chance to own exclusive-edition Whitchurch Silk or gift it to a loved one! 🧣

Our warping mill is more than 130 years old, and our creel is thought to be the last surviving example of its kind. Without the necessary skills to preserve this rare engineering, this historic machinery could fall into disrepair forever.
