First things first: we don’t even know if this text exchange is real. 😂 But it sure has gone viral, and I think it brings up some REALLY important conversations about kids, food, school lunches, added sugar, restriction, and how different families choose to feed their kids.

And I really don’t think this needs to become another thing that divides parents.

I also come at this with a unique perspective. Before becoming a full-time pediatric dietitian, I worked in school food service. I’ve seen A LOT of lunchboxes, but I’ve also watched kids of all ages navigate food when their parents aren’t there making the decisions for them.

When our kids are little, we control so much of their food environment. But eventually, we won’t.

You can care about added sugar AND allow your kids access to sweets.

You can have boundaries around sweets AND not demonize them.

You can decide Oreos aren’t something you buy very often AND talk about that choice without calling them “bad,” “junk” or something your child should feel guilty about wanting.

Allowing access doesn’t mean a free-for-all.

We can still decide what foods we buy, what we serve and what’s available in our homes. How we communicate those boundaries matters.

Personally, I sometimes include a small sweet alongside the rest of my kids’ lunches. It’s not a reward. They don’t have to eat the “healthy stuff” first. It’s simply another part of the meal.

Because eventually our kids are going to encounter ALL kinds of foods and people who eat differently than they do.

I’d rather help them learn how to navigate that while I’m still here to guide them than expect the rest of the world to follow our family’s food rules.

There is SO much to unpack here, and I have a feeling this won’t be my last #OreoGate conversation.

What are your go-to breakfasts for your kids?

These are just three, shelf-stable options of MANY we rotate through.

We also do pancakes, waffles, avocado toast, scrambled eggs, and mini bagels + more

And we always pair a fruit and protein with these so no, this isn’t the ONLY thing they’re eating NOR is it what they eat every day.

Variety > micro analyzing one particular food, ingredient, or nutrient 🤷🏻‍♀️

Want the easiest and one of the healthiest lunches you can give your kids this year?

You don’t even have to pack it…

it’s school lunch 🙌🏼🍎 (I know this will ruffles some feathers 😆🤷🏻‍♀️)

In the U.S., public school meals follow strict, evidence-based nutrition standards, designed to fuel learning and growth.

They have to offer whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and milk, (FOR LESS THAN THE COST OF A LATTE!!) while limiting sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars.

Research shows that kids who eat school meals consume more fruits, vegetables, fiber, whole grains, and calcium compared to those who bring lunch from home.

Here in Minnesota, and in several other states, universal free breakfast and lunch means every student can participate - no applications, no stigma.

Even in states without universal meals, paying for school lunch can still be more budget-friendly than packing, especially when you factor in time, convenience, and variety.

Of course, school lunch isn’t the right fit for every family every day. Some kids have allergies (schools still have to reasonably avoid ate these), sensory preferences, or other needs that make home-packed meals a better choice.

But it’s worth knowing that school lunch isn’t just for families who need it financially, it’s there to nourish all kids.

And yes, menus can always improve. If you’d like tips on how to get involved with your local school district, message me. I can help you approach it in a respectful, constructive way that actually makes a difference.

So whether you’re choosing it for the nutrition, the convenience, or both, school lunch is an option worth considering.

Things I’m not losing sleep over as a pediatric dietitian + mom 👀

Not because I don’t care about nutrition. I obviously do. And every single one of these topics deserves more nuance than we can fit into a 15-second reel.

But there’s a BIG difference between caring about nutrition and feeling like you need to optimize every single thing your kid eats.

I’m looking at the big picture.

So no, I’m not losing sleep over whether the berries I bought are organic, my kids occasionally eating artificial colors, seed oils existing in their food, some added sugar, serving frozen instead of fresh, swinging through the drive-thru for dinner, or not making their favorite snacks from scratch.

Could we have a much deeper conversation about each one? Absolutely.

But I also think the hyperfixation on individual ingredients, foods and feeding choices can do a whole lot more harm than we realize. When every trip to the grocery store becomes a list of things to fear or avoid, we can lose sight of what actually matters.

One food, one ingredient or one meal isn’t going to make or break your kid’s diet.

Nutrition matters. AND so do convenience, affordability, access, enjoyment, your relationship with food and your sanity.

There is SO much noise around feeding kids right now. Sometimes we need to turn the volume down and zoom out.

What’s something you’ve stopped stressing about when it comes to feeding your kids?
