If your cat won’t let you hold them yet, here’s how to actually get there.

Quick note first: Poppyseed was never scared or distressed, she was just restless and hadn't learned how to settle yet. If your cat shows real fear or discomfort (flattened ears, hissing, trying to escape), that's different and forcing it isn't the answer. This process is for cats who just need time to get used to it.

This isn't a one day thing either. Clear your expectations, it's a process and that's completely normal :)

1. Start when your cat is already relaxed, not when they're wound up or trying to avoid you. Keep your voice and body soft and quiet, cats pick up on your energy fast.

2. Only hold them for a few seconds at first. The second they start to squirm, let them go. I even like to put Poppyseed down before she squirms. You want them to learn that being held ends before it gets uncomfortable, not after they're already fighting to get down.

3. Repeat this over and over. A few seconds becomes a few more, and eventually those seconds turn into minutes.

4. Pair it with something they already love, a treat, a chin scratch, whatever they enjoy. Over time they start linking being held with something good instead of something to escape.

It's less about forcing connection and more about proving, over and over, that your arms are a safe place to be. That's it. That's the whole secret!

This is my first full year as a cat dad. And @saltycattreats sent the sweetest thing to celebrate it.

Single ingredient treats, tuna and chicken and minnows, nothing weird in them. And purees for skin and coat, for calm, for digestion. Poppyseed has been loving the new tastes, and I love introducing new things to her diet. And lots of fun things for me!

First year down. Lucky to be her dad, and glad I can give her treats this good!
