I know, I know. Almost 10 minutes. Apparently we’re doing long-form content now.

But this conversation deserves the time.

The conversation around biology, fairness and transgender athletes is much bigger than Washington, but Initiative 638 is one example of what happens when a deeply divided national conversation becomes actual proposed policy.

And I didn’t want to approach this by deciding what I believed first and then finding the facts that supported it, especially as a trans man who played girls’ sports growing up.

I wanted to understand why people are concerned about fairness in girls’ sports. I wanted to understand what biology and the research actually tell us. I wanted to look at the Washington athletes and races being discussed instead of just repeating headlines about them. And I wanted to understand what this specific initiative would actually do, including the parts that affect far more girls than just the transgender girls at the center of the debate.

There are uncomfortable parts of this conversation for people on both sides. I don’t think we get anywhere by pretending those parts don’t exist.

So give me the almost 10 minutes. Listen before deciding where you disagree. Ask questions. Check what I’m saying. Look into it yourself. And maybe try to understand why someone can care deeply about the kids involved and still come to a different conclusion than you.

We can have hard conversations without turning children into villains.

And we should probably get better at having them, because these conversations are becoming policy.

I don’t talk about politics on here very often, and I definitely don’t usually ask you to listen to me talk for 6 whole minutes. But this one matters.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to have a platform, and part of that is recognizing when something deserves more than a share to my story or assuming someone else will speak up about it.

Washington Initiative 001 directly involves the rights of parents, the privacy and safety of young people, and what happens when those two things don’t fit neatly together.

I work in abuse prevention, so I know the lens I bring to this conversation. I also know there are multiple ways to interpret information like this, which is exactly why I wanted to actually read it, understand the arguments, and talk about what concerns me.

You don’t have to agree with every conclusion I reach. I’m asking you to pay attention, ask questions, read beyond the headlines, and decide what you believe for yourself.

Because the young people affected by decisions like this deserve for the adults making them to actually be paying attention.

And yeah, this time I’m asking for the full 6 minutes.

One of the funniest things about masculinity is how many completely made-up rules some men have decided are required to participate.

Don’t cry. Don’t wear pink. Don’t order the fruity drink. Don’t care too much about how you look. Don’t compliment another man. Don’t be too affectionate. Don’t do anything remotely feminine because apparently masculinity is a very delicate ecosystem that can be destroyed by a skincare routine.

And as a trans man, I find that especially funny.

I spent years figuring out who I was. I didn’t do all of that just to finally become a man and immediately hand somebody else a checklist for what kind of man I’m allowed to be.

I like being emotionally available. I like loving my wife loudly. I like taking care of myself. I like pretty shit. I like being soft when I want to be and strong when I need to be.

None of those things make me less of a man.

And if seeing another man comfortable enough in his masculinity to exist outside of your rules makes you uncomfortable, maybe my masculinity isn’t the one worth examining.

Anyway, wear the pink shirt. Order the fruity drink. Tell your boys you love them.

Turns out Piper’s life advice is mostly just go outside, be weird, have fun and eat good food. And tbh??? She might be onto something.
