There’s no exact order you HAVE to follow when fading.

In this video I established the top of my fade first, but you could easily start with your zero open, build your guidelines from there, and work your way up into the one open / 1.5 area. The order matters less than understanding what each length is doing and keeping your transition from light to dark consistent.

You can also make your fade more compressed like I did here, or spread your guidelines out more if you want a more expanded fade.

Learn the fundamentals first like shading, clipper angle, hand movement and how to control your guidelines, and you’ll eventually be able to approach fades in different ways without getting lost.

Canelo said he’s getting back in the ring, so we had to get him right 🥊

We went with a shorter warrior-style mullet with a taper, keeping enough length in the fringe to cover the corners while removing some of the bulk around the crown. The goal was a shape that still had movement and texture but was easy for him to style without doing too much.

Kept the shear work simple, freehanded the taper and beard with no guards, no enhancements, and finished everything off with @forhairproducts Four Texture Powder to bring his waves back to life.

One of the safest ways to fade is to change the way you’re using the guard before changing the guard itself.

If something isn’t blending, don’t immediately grab something shorter. First, try changing your clipper angle. If that doesn’t work, add a little more pressure and see if you can hear the hair cutting. If it’s still not reacting, then slowly close the lever or move down to something shorter.

Starting more open gives you room to adjust without accidentally taking too much hair off.

And remember, every area of the head won’t react the same. The hair in the back is usually denser than around the temples, so sometimes you’ll need a little more pressure or a slightly different angle to get the same shade.

Fading is really about reading the hair and making small adjustments instead of automatically switching guards.

You don’t have to fade in the exact order I did here. You could start with no guard, lever open, work into your one open, and still get the same result. There’s no one “right” way to fade. What matters more is understanding the fundamentals behind it, like shading, clipper angle, and hand movement etc.

And for context, once you really understand this process, you can finish one side in around 2–3 minutes and get through the fade itself in as little as 15–20 minutes.
