45. What actually happens at a newborn pediatrician appointment

You spent 45 minutes getting everyone dressed, packed the diaper bag like you’re leaving for a 3-day expedition, and somehow you’re still late.

You arrive at the pediatrician and immediately have to undress your newborn because apparently clothes are forbidden at the doctor.

First, they weigh your baby.

And suddenly that number has the emotional weight of your college GPA.

“She’s gained 4 ounces.”

Okay cool. So we’re all going to celebrate this like she just got promoted.

Then they measure her length and head circumference, because apparently we’re tracking every millimeter of this tiny potato.

The pediatrician will check her heart, lungs, hips, eyes, ears, mouth, reflexes, belly, skin, and probably every other body part you didn’t realize could be examined.

Then comes the real appointment:

“How is feeding?”

“How often is she eating?”

“Breast or bottle?”

“How many wet diapers?”

“How many poops?”

“What does the poop look like?”

And suddenly you’re giving a grown adult a full forensic analysis of your baby’s bowel movements.

Then they’ll ask about sleep.

Which is hilarious because you haven’t slept long enough to remember your own name.

They’ll also talk about safe sleep, vitamin D if you’re breastfeeding, tummy time, cord care, fever, when to call, and what newborn behavior is actually normal.

And PLEASE ask your questions.

The weird ones.

The embarrassing ones.

The “I Googled this at 3:17 AM and now I’m convinced my baby has 14 diseases” ones.

Because I promise you, they’ve heard it before.

The newborn appointment isn’t just about checking the baby.

It’s also about checking YOU.

How are you doing?

Are you getting any sleep?

Do you feel supported?

Are you feeling overwhelmed?

And if you’re not doing okay, please say so.

You don’t have to show up looking like you’ve got this all figured out.

You just had a baby.

Nobody expects you to know what you’re doing.

Especially the baby. 😂
The $h!t they forget to teach you about starting solids

Nobody tells you that starting solids is basically handing your baby a plate of food and then watching them use it as a skincare routine.

But there is actually a LOT happening here.

Around 6 months, most babies are developmentally ready to start solids when they can sit with support, have good head and neck control, bring things to their mouth, and show interest in food. And no, this does NOT mean they suddenly need three square meals a day. Breast milk or formula is still doing the heavy nutritional lifting.

At first, solids are about learning, not replacing milk.

Your baby is learning how to move food around their mouth, coordinate their tongue, chew, swallow, handle different textures, and eventually get better at feeding themselves. So if 90% of the meal ends up on their face, congratulations. Their motor development is thriving.

Also, please don’t only feed them fruit because your baby has decided vegetables are a personal attack. Iron becomes especially important around 6 months, so regularly offer iron-rich foods like meat, beans, lentils, iron-fortified cereals, and eggs.

And allergens? We don’t need to keep peanut butter in witness protection anymore. Current guidance supports introducing common allergens like peanut and egg around the time solids are started, when baby is developmentally ready, rather than unnecessarily delaying them. Introduce them in safe forms and keep offering them regularly if tolerated.

You also need to know the difference between gagging and choking before you start.

Gagging is a normal protective reflex while babies learn to handle food. It can be LOUD and dramatic. Choking happens when the airway is blocked and can be much quieter. If you don’t know infant choking first aid, learn it before baby starts eating.

And please remember:

You do not need to make your 6-month-old a three-course organic tasting menu.

Sometimes lunch is avocado, shredded chicken, and approximately 14 billion crumbs.

They’re learning.

You’re learning.

And everyone is covered in banana.

Welcome to starting solids. 😂
A letter to the mom who feels like motherhood has swallowed her whole

I know there are days when you look around and realize you can barely remember who you were before everyone needed you.

Your days are full of tiny hands, snacks, laundry, diapers, dishes, nap schedules, bedtime battles, and someone yelling “MOM” from another room before you have even finished your coffee.

And somewhere in all of that, you started wondering where you went.

Maybe you miss the girl who could leave the house without packing half of it first. The woman who had hobbies, quiet mornings, long showers, spontaneous plans, and a personality that wasn’t entirely built around keeping tiny humans alive.

Maybe you even feel guilty for missing her.

Please don’t.

You did not disappear. You are still in there.

Motherhood didn’t erase you. It just asked so much of you that sometimes there isn’t much left over at the end of the day to hear yourself think.

And I want you to know that you are allowed to want more than motherhood without wanting less of your children.

You are allowed to love them more than anything and still need a break.

You are allowed to miss your old life and be grateful for your new one.

You are allowed to have dreams that have nothing to do with being a mom.

You are allowed to become someone new without feeling like you have to completely abandon who you were.

One day, the baby who needs you every five minutes won’t need you quite so much. The toddler will buckle their own seatbelt. The little hands will let go of yours.

And you will have more room to find yourself again.

But until then, please don’t measure your worth by how much of yourself you can give away.

You are a person too.

You deserve to be cared for, known, rested, loved, and remembered.

And if motherhood feels like it has swallowed you whole right now, just know this:

You are not gone.

You’re still becoming.

And there is so much of you left to find.
