Kristoffer Borgli wrote Paul Matthews without anyone in mind. Once A24 signed on, Ari Aster reached out to Nicolas Cage. Cage signed on immediately because, in Borgli's words, he felt the film was dealing with issues personal to him. Borgli later told IndieWire that Cage "has, in many ways, experienced a lot of the same things as the character goes through."

Nicolas Cage has spent years as a meme: supercuts of his most emotional performances ripped out of context. Paul Matthews is a man who becomes famous for nothing and gets destroyed for it. People start having nightmares about him. The world stops separating the dreamer from the dream.

Borgli told Screen International he wanted to take an idea that belonged in a horror movie and throw it into "the banality of our culture."

Twelve years after the Nuremberg trials ended, the psychiatrist who spent 80 hours interviewing Hermann Göring (Crowe) took his own life the exact same way Göring did. Potassium cyanide. New Year's Day, 1958. Douglas Kelley did it in front of his wife, his father, and his three children.

That's the man Rami Malek plays in this scene.

Kelley was a 33 year old US Army psychiatrist when he was assigned to evaluate the 22 N*zi leaders awaiting trial. He gave them Rorschach tests. IQ assessments. Hours of one on one interviews. He performed magic tricks during sessions because he believed it built rapport. He walked in expecting to find monsters, some kind of clinically identifiable pathology that would explain everything.

He didn't find it. Only one of the defendants, Robert Ley, showed any real mental illness. The rest tested within normal range. Their average IQ was 128. Göring scored 138, third highest in the room. Kelley's conclusion, published in his 1947 book, was the finding he couldn't shake for the rest of his life. There is no N*zi personality. These were ordinary men. And a society like this one could happen anywhere, including America.

He spent the next decade trying to warn people about that. He drank. He grew obsessed with poisons, particularly cyanide. He'd threatened to end his life before. When he finally did, some people assumed he'd smuggled the capsule home from Nuremberg. His family disputed that. The parallel was there either way.

Rami Malek wasn't cast in this role. He read the script on his own and reached out to the director himself. Russell Crowe signed on in 2019 and stayed attached for five years while the film struggled to find financing. James Vanderbilt, who wrote Zodiac, developed this project for thirteen years before cameras rolled.
