#ad imagine being married to a man who policed what you wore…and then coming home to a woman on your bed…

shrinking yourself won’t keep you safe. it’ll keep you trapped in a box you don’t belong in, surrounded by people who benefit from keeping you there.

after i ditched the cage, i started a career as a burlesque performer, married my person - and he loves all of me.

go figure.

if i could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this:

you deserve the safety to be yourself.

you deserve a love that makes you thank the heavens daily.

maybe you’re a little like me: a little quirky, a little strange, and fully deserving of the joy of being known and loved as you are.

that’s why i partnered with @fet__app , a dating app built for people who are proudly particular. because the right person isn’t looking for a smaller version of you.

they’re looking for the real one.

find @fet__app - available on all app stores 🤍

“aren’t you scared you’ll age out of burlesque?”

shakes head

people only ask this because of what they think burlesque is.

they picture young women shimmying on a stage.

but burlesque is for every body, gender and age.

judith stein is in her late seventies and still gets booked.

tempest storm performed into her eighties.
dita von teese is in her fifties and just extended her las vegas residency through 2026 because demand was that high.

but honestly, i think the question itself is flawed.

the assumption is that performers become less valuable as they get older.

it’s the same old script women get handed everywhere - that we peak young and are expected to quietly disappear after. shrink. cover up. make room.

i’d argue the opposite.

every year a performer spends in this industry, they’re accumulating intellectual property & monetizeable wisdom.

every act.
every lesson learned.
every audience relationship.
every producer connection.
every marketing experiment.
every story.
compounds.

both @bellasincle and @kknoxharter have spoken about the importance of documenting our history so that burlesque artists aren’t forgotten.

i think part of that conversation is the preservation of knowledge.

the lessons you’ve learned.

the mistakes you’ve made.

the systems you’ve developed.

the insights you’ve gained after years on stage.

when that knowledge stays trapped inside a performer, it disappears when they leave the industry.

when it’s turned into a class, a book, a workshop, a newsletter, a podcast, or a framework, it can circulate. it can teach. it can influence the next generation.

intellectual property persists and stays sellable on your terms. it may need updating, and some of it goes obsolete as the world moves on - but it still remains a part of history.

i don’t think we should worry about aging out. every profession (and every life ) has an expiry date anyway.

any career that runs on your body eventually asks you to build assets off it. athletes know & act on this.

in 1974, marina abramović walked into a gallery in naples with 72 objects on a table: flowers, a feather, honey, a knife, a razor, and a loaded g*n.

her instructions were simple:

“do anything you want to me. i am the object.”

for 6 hours, she stood completely still. at first they were gentle. gave her flowers.

then something shifted.

they cut her clothes off. sliced her neck and drank her blo*d. pushed thorns into her skin. someone loaded the g*n and held it to her head. her own finger was placed on the trigger.

and then the 6 hours ended. she started walking toward them.

the ones who hurt her ran.

for 6 hours they treated her like an object. the second she moved - the second she became a person again, in their eyes - they couldn’t face what they’d done.

stillness made her safe. movement made her a threat.

i spoke about being a “disrespectful” woman in my last post. & i’d define that as bucking at the rules for the sake of your personhood. being “you” without caring about the social norms that want to keep you in a cage.

there is an illusion of safety in silence. in passivity. in becoming small enough to avoid punishment.

but then i think about this performance.

wahala means trouble, and i wrote that song from the lens of someone who was fed up with people bothering my peace. perhaps we ARE the trouble. we destabilize the status quo. and i think that is a necessary part of activism.

ain’t that some wahala?

#capitalism separated us on purpose. the homemaker from the wage worker, the caregiver from the s*x worker. because solidarity between the exploited has always threatened the people profiting from our exhaustion/labor.

worker solidarity across the board, boo. ❤️
