Here’s the thing I finally admitted to myself:

When I don’t do my hair on a trip, I’m a little bummed the whole time with how it feels and then bummed again later looking back at the photos.

It sounds vain but it just makes me feel more like myself (and less overstimulated). So I used to haul a whole bag of hair tools everywhere.

Last summer I dragged my Shark all around the UK… only to plug it in when we got there and realize it wouldn’t work overseas. All that space in my suitcase for nothing.

So this trip, I brought one tool.

Just one.

It’s a curling iron, a straightener, and a thermal brush all in one, you just swap the attachments, and the whole thing is dual voltage, so it actually worked the entire two weeks in the UK.

I didn’t even need a converter!

I curled with it, straightened with it, used the straightener to make waves one day, did a faux blowout with it, and even did Nellie’s hair with it all the time.

Only one tool, the whole family could use and I felt like myself in every single photo.

I’m not packing my whole drawer (or hauling something that won’t even turn on) EVER AGAIN.

This is something my that has been on my heart ever since we
we ducked into the quad at St Mary’s College on our last day in St Andrews.

Out of the unexpected rain, to eat the meal Drew gets every single time we’re there, homemade steak and ale pie.

There’s a tree in the middle of that quad that’s been standing since 1740, almost 300 years.

The whole town is busy… students, tourists, cars, noise. But inside that little courtyard it’s completely still. Just the tree, the rain, and us, on our last afternoon of the trip.

I read this scripture on the plane ride home and immediately thought of that tree:

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither.” — Psalm 1:3

That’s how God has always felt to me.

Not far off or complicated.

More like that tree. Something real and living and quiet, that was here long before me and will be here long after.

Somewhere to sit out of the rain. Shade when it’s too much.

Something steady. Especially when nothing else is.

I don’t always have the perfect words for my faith. But I know what it feels like to sit with Him, in the quiet, in the loud, in the rain, in the sun, and feel steadied and held.

If you need somewhere steady today, I hope you feel Him too 🤍

Dad had an early tee time so I dropped him off and got ready with a McMuffin and Coke Zero. This was our Scotland morning routine and honestly I’ve never been happier.

The whole thing is 11 products and takes me about 5 minutes. It’s the everyday face I can genuinely do anywhere.

In the car, at the park, in a fast food booth in another country.

Nothing complicated, nothing that needs 30 minutes. Just the stuff that makes me look like and feel myself… and a little more awake.
