Did I make a huge mistake ordering an out of box pergola?
Hiring a contractor to build you a custom pergola is like hiring a Renaissance painter to draw you a stick figure. Expensive, slow, and somehow still full of drama.
A contractor quote for a proper aluminum louvered pergola usually lands somewhere between “ouch” and “I need to sit down.” Design fees, materials markup, labor, the inevitable “we found a slight issue with the patio” surcharge… it adds up fast.
@pergolux_us ships you a factory-engineered aluminum system for a fraction of that. You can hire a couple of friends or a local handyman to put it together and still come out ahead. It’s the outdoor equivalent of buying the nice pre-made lasagna instead of hiring a private chef who insists on making the noodles from scratch while charging you by the hour. I didn’t make a mistake here. It was a no brainer.

This was an older project, rebuilding the deck off of our house to the pool. One of my first bigger projects that I had ever done. I learned a lot, tackled a lot of challenges, the experience was a good one. Looking back at this video now there are things I would’ve done differently, but in the end, I’m proud of what was accomplished. Things I’ve learned from since then. I would have taped all the blocking and made the blocking beefier. I would have poured a pad for the stringers to sit on instead of blocks. I would have extended the pad out further so grass didn’t grow right against the riser. I would have spaced my ledger board directly off of the house instead of right against it. I would have aligned my floor joists by height in ascending order and not planed the tops of the joists. There are probably other things I would have done different. The best thing is to recognize the mistakes, change course, continue to grow, and strive to do better each and every time.
The more you end up working by yourself, the more tips and tricks you start to pick up to improve how you do things, the time it takes, and how to do more with less. If there is a will, there is a way. This is an independent deck frame I am making for my kids playground. Once I put the decking on, I’ll end up building an A frame house on top of it. All part of the master plan for the backyard playground build!
A lot of comments about why no electrical. At the time, I was just trying to get the thing built so we could use it. A year later I had more time on my hands and finally got around to running electrical to the porch. I ran a 15 amp circuit for floodlights and plugging in devices, I ran a 20 amp circuit for all the soffit lighting and ceiling lights along with the ceiling fan and TV, and I ran a 30 amp circuit for two heaters. Adding electrical was always on the list of things to do. I’m finally getting around to. It was amazing because it makes the whole experience on the porch even better.
