The first thing I’ve done in my new garden is get some trees in the ground. Picked as the backbone of the garden, these four trees will support lots of insects for birds to eat as well as provide fruit to hopefully lure in my favourite bird, the Blackbird.

Hawthorn ‘Crimson Cloud’ — pink blossom in spring, berries by autumn
Crab apples Evereste + Red Sentinel — planted as a pair so there’s fruit on the branch for months: Evereste ripens and gets stripped early, Red Sentinel holds on into the depths of winter
Rowan ‘Cardinal Royal’ — usually the first berries taken each year, and if it’s a good winter for Waxwings, this is the tree that might bring them in.

All of these are avaliable from @britishgardencentres #ad
They’ve spent the summer breeding in Iceland and Greenland. Now hundreds of thousands of Pink-footed Geese are heading your way and towards the end of September that musical cackling from the sky is your sign they’ve arrived.

Most people look up and see geese. Learn the call and you’ll be able to marvel in the wonder of these migratory geese. That high pitched, musical cackling is completely different to your local geese and once you’ve heard it, autumn will never sound the same.

You don’t need to travel to a famous reserve to experience this. Step outside on a calm evening this month, anywhere between Scotland and Norfolk, and just listen to the sky.

Comment SUBSTACK below and I’ll send you my full September birding guide with everything worth looking and listening for this month.

Have you heard your first Pink-footed Geese of the autumn yet?

Kingfishers have a reputation for being nearly impossible to actually see properly, most sightings are a blur of blue disappearing downstream before you’ve even registered what it was. Right now that changes.

Head to slow moving stretches of river, streams or ditches with overhanging branches, that’s where they get a clear sightline to fish. Early morning and late afternoon tend to be quieter and more productive.

That screech isn’t a call you’ll find explained on most bird ID guides, but if you’ve spent any time outside this summer, you’ve almost certainly heard it. Juvenile Buzzards keep this up for weeks after fledging, and it usually gets louder as the summer goes on, not quieter, since the parents start reducing food to force them into hunting for themselves.

Worth listening for it near woodland edges and open fields, especially on calm days when sound carries. Once you clock the difference between that screech and the adult’s mew, you’ll start hearing young Buzzards everywhere.

Let me know if you’ve heard young Buzzards recently!
