Things I’ve learned being the only man in a female friend group ep. 6

I think one of the hardest things to understand about unhealthy relationships is that from the outside, the answer can look painfully obvious.

“Why do you keep going back?”

“You KNOW how this ends.”

“You deserve better.”

And sometimes… she already knows all of that.

Knowing something intellectually and being emotionally ready to act on it are two completely different things.

Something I’ve become really interested in is the idea that familiarity can sometimes disguise itself as chemistry.

Not because someone wants to be treated poorly.

Not because they enjoy chaos.

And definitely not because they deserve what’s happening to them.

But sometimes we become comfortable navigating emotional environments we already understand… even when those environments aren’t particularly comfortable.

If you learned somewhere along the way that affection is inconsistent, that love has to be earned, or that closeness comes with anxiety… someone recreating those feelings later might not immediately register as unfamiliar.

Your brain might recognize the pattern before you recognize the problem.

And sometimes there’s an even deeper layer:

Maybe this time I can make it work.

Maybe this time they’ll choose me.

Maybe this time I can love someone enough that they finally become the person I need them to be.

Almost like getting a second opportunity to rewrite an old ending.

But

You do not have to keep recreating the same test just to finally get a passing grade.

So instead of only asking yourself:

“Why do I keep choosing this?”

Maybe get curious and ask:

“What about this feels familiar to me?”

“What am I trying to prove?”

“What would love look like if I didn’t have to earn it?”

Because maybe healing isn’t finally convincing the same type of person to give you a different ending.

Maybe it’s reaching a point where the things that once felt like “chemistry” no longer feel like home.

And realizing…

peace might feel unfamiliar before it starts feeling safe.

Anyway.

Please collect your emotional damage on the way out.

The older I get, the more I’ve realized it’s never really about where you end up… it’s about who convinces you to leave the house in the first place. 😂
