One of my favorite things about starting solids is realizing that baby doesn’t need a completely separate meal. Tonight was taco night for the family, so I simply modified what we were already eating to make it developmentally appropriate for her.

🥑 Avocado + ground beef mashed together — healthy fats + a great source of highly bioavailable heme iron
🫑 Steamed bell pepper with the peel removed — cooked until very soft and a source of vitamin C
🫘 Mashed black beans + breast milk — thinned to an appropriate consistency and another source of iron, fiber + plant-based protein

At six months, I’m especially intentional about including iron-rich foods + healthy fats while also exposing her to lots of different tastes and textures.

Starting solids doesn’t have to mean making two dinners. Serve the family meal and modify the texture, shape + ingredients to meet baby where they are developmentally. 🤍

Week TWO of starting solids 🥑🥚🥩🍓

Come grocery shopping with me as a pediatric dietitian mom feeding my baby! 👶🏼

This week I’m focusing on:
🥩 Iron-rich foods
🥑 Healthy fats
🥚 Continued allergen exposure
🥦 Lots of different flavors + textures
🍓 Variety, variety, variety!

At this stage, breast milk/formula is still doing the heavy lifting nutritionally—solids are about learning, exploring, and building skills while introducing important nutrients along the way.

No fancy “baby foods” needed. A lot of what I buy for baby is simply what the rest of our family is already eating—just modified to be safe + developmentally appropriate. 🤍

Follow along for week TWO of starting solids!

🌽 Corn on the cob: We talked through the safest way to introduce corn with the feeding therapist @101beforeone . Whole, loose corn kernels can be a choking hazard for new eaters, so instead of serving the kernels, I offered the bare corn cob for her to hold, mouth, chew + gnaw on.

Babies are naturally in an adventurous eating phase between 6-9 months of age, which makes this such an important window to expose them to lots of different flavors, textures, and foods.

And YES — you can season your baby’s food! 🙌

Garlic, onion, paprika, oregano, basil, cumin, cinnamon, herbs, spices... babies don’t need bland food.
