It happens all the time, a small child will suddenly notice that I’m missing my hand, and they’ll blurt out a question like “where’s your hand?!” I glance at mom or dad and they are visibly uncomfortable and leave me to navigate the child’s question with no help. As someone who is fairly comfortable talking about my arm, I don’t mind this too much, but I WOULD like it if the parent would help their child process their curiosity instead of leaving me to do that for their child—a child whom I don’t have a personal relationship with. Here’s what I know; kids are curious, not cruel. But when curiosity turns into a barrage of questions, it can make everyone feel a little uncomfy. So parents; no shushing, no shame, no lecture about being polite. The LAST thing we want to do is teach kids that their curiosity is bad because it will still show up, just in the form of stares and bullying. What we DO want to do is model what respectful boundaries look like. Our kids are still learning how the world works. Curiosity is their gift. Our job is teaching them how to carry it with care.
