It’s nearly impossible to articulate all of the learning and whole-child benefits that come from allowing real life to be a real part of the “curriculum” but let me try to share some of the learning that I observed on this day… We had discussions about why it’s important to support local farms, and why we would choose to shop at the farmers market instead of the grocery store. We also discussed why the meat was more expensive than at the grocery store. We discussed with the beef Farmer some of their farming practices, and what sets them apart from traditional farming. They taught us about different cuts of beef, where they come from on the cow, what the best ways to use them are, and some recipe ideas. We also talked through budgeting, and how we make choices about what we’re buying with what we plan to eat that week in mind. After we grabbed our Italian ice, we put our food in the car, grabbed our blanket and homeschool bag, and laid our blanket in the grass… Some “sparks” that I brought with me: •Their notebooks and watercolors— pretty much always because these allow for open-ended learning and allowing them to demonstrate their learning of whatever they’re interested in. •Nature Anatomy— I brought this one because it was the most simple way to have one book with me that opened up a variety of things that they could dig into deeper in the park environment, if something sparked their interest. • my 11-year-old’s penpal letter that she needed to finish and the envelope that she needed to address. She has a penpal in England that she’s had for years. (penpal’s mom, if you’re reading this, it’s coming🫶🏻) • I also brought my 11 year-old the 50 states book in case she chose to finish her notebook booking page on California. • I also brought her things to make a thank you card for someone, and the envelope for her to address. • I also brought leveled readers for my six and seven-year-old and a book for my 11-year-old. • I also brought language arts curriculum for my six and seven, and math for my 11– in case they weren’t particularly inspired.
