Mr. Benny recently developed an upper respiratory infection. Since Benny is on chemotherapy and steroids he’s immunocompromised and little things can escalate rather quickly. Fortunately we got him seen immediately and he got himself an antibiotic injection and some eyedrops and he’s recovered well. Thus video is him waiting for his appointment when he wasn’t feeling great. He’s always such a perfect little gentleman when he’s outside of the house.

What would she ever do without me? It’s hard being the emotional support cat.

Over the last two years we’ve been under mandatory evacuation orders twice because of wildfires. Thankfully, both times we were able to return home within a few hours. But it made us realize that one day we might not be so lucky.

So we’re converting this little Transit van into a climate-controlled emergency evacuation space for Benny and the other cats.

The goal is simple: if we ever have to leave in a hurry, they’ll have a safe, comfortable place to stay without spending hours or days confined to carriers while we scramble to figure out where to go.

We’re also starting to get Benny used to the van now, long before there’s ever an emergency. Every day he spends a few minutes exploring, sniffing around, and getting comfortable with it so that if we ever do have to evacuate, it won’t be a scary, unfamiliar place.

It’s a tiny van, but we’re hoping to turn it into a tiny home away from home for the cats, complete with air conditioning, ventilation, insulation, and everything they would need in an emergency.

If you’ve built out a van before, we’d love your recommendations, especially for AC, vent fans, insulation, power systems, and anything else that might help keep a van safe and comfortable for cats.

As you can see, Sir Benny is already conducting the first official inspection. ❤️
