Leeds, the wait is over. Fat Hippo has officially landed on Boar Lane.

We popped down for the preview last night before today’s big opening, and this place is all about stacked burgers, comfort food sides and a playful menu that makes deciding what to order almost impossible.

I went for Born Slippy: double smashed patties, American cheese, garlic butter mayo, jalapeños, hot honey and braised pork rib meat. It was gloriously messy, with the heat and sweetness playing off each other nicely, though I’d have liked more of that pulled pork! Dirty Tater Tots on the side were delicious, crispy little bites smothered in Fat Hippo sauce and topped with bacon bits.

Hubby took on The Fat Hippo with cheese, smoked bacon, chorizo, onion rings and their signature sauce. Two onion rings, which of course meant one mysteriously found its way onto my plate.

But the true winner of the night? Freddie’s Fingers: Crack. Juicy buttermilk chicken tenders with smoked chilli jello, garlic butter mayo and a sprinkle of Parmesan. Easily the best thing we tried, and the reason I’ll be going back soon for one of their chicken burgers.

The venue itself feels like a great fit for Leeds city centre, with a lively atmosphere that works whether you’re in for lunch, after-work food or a weekend stop with friends. Fat Hippo is all about seriously good burgers.

They’re now open on Boar Lane and I reckon Leeds has just gained another reliable spot for indulgent comfort food.

My Thai, York Place, Leeds. If Thai food’s your thing and you like finding spots that feel a bit secret, this one’s for you. I only knew My Thai from Wade Lane, but this little York Place spot has completely won me over. It is tucked away below ground, small and cosy, and feels so much more personal, almost like your own Thai hideout in the middle of the city.

Bee and Corn made us feel welcome the second we sat down. They were so friendly and thoughtful, the kind of service that instantly makes an evening memorable. As we were kindly invited, we asked Bee to pick for us and honestly it was the best decision we could have made.

We started with the Sample Platter (spring roll, satay, fish cake, pork dumpling, crispy prawn and corn cake), plus Spare Ribs that were sticky, rich and easily my dish of the night. Add in crispy Chicken Wings and a fragrant bowl of Tom Kha with chicken, and starters alone felt like a proper feast.

For mains, Bee brought us a mix of her favourites. The creamy comfort of Massaman Curry with chicken, tangy Tamarind Duck, fiery Gra Pow Moo Krob (crispy pork belly with basil, garlic and chilli) and a generous Pad Thai with prawns. Every dish was spot on, and what we could not eat, we happily boxed up to bring home.

Between the food, that hidden away setting and Bee and Corn’s amazing hospitality, York Place really stood out. They also run a cracking Quick Lunch menu with two courses and a soft drink for £16, served from 11:30 to 15:30, plus an Early Bird from 16:30 to 18:00 if you fancy an early dinner. This visit was kindly hosted, but I would go back tomorrow just for those ribs.

Only in Leeds could you find a Yorkshire pudding floating in ramen. And somehow… it works.

For August, Maki & Ramen are running a Yorkshire Day menu that reimagines local favourites, and the standout for me was hands down the Sunday Roast Ramen. Silky noodles, roast chicken, spuds, veg, and that Yorkshire pud soaking up a savoury broth. Comforting, quirky, and actually really tasty.

We also tried the Yorkshire Three Peaks; three rice creations inspired by meat and tatie pie, charred veg, and even a blueberry and Parkin twist. On top of that came their playful fish and chips sushi, plus an iced Yorkshire Tea matcha latte.

It’s definitely one of the more unusual collabs I’ve seen in Leeds, and if you’re curious, the menu runs until the end of the month.

So… Yorkshire pud in ramen. Genius or madness?

Back to Tattu after 8 years… here’s why I won’t wait that long again

Eight years since our last visit to Tattu Leeds and I honestly can’t believe we left it that long. Saturday, 6pm, the place was buzzing under those famous cherry blossoms and from the first bite, I knew we were in for something special.

We went full à la carte at this modern Asian fusion restaurant, starting with Szechuan rock shrimp, seven spiced seared tuna, and sticky beef short rib. The shrimp were crisp with a gentle heat, the tuna was silky, fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the short rib… wow. Fall-apart tender with a glaze that carried this deep, savoury richness, almost like the intensity you get from roasted bone marrow, it was pure umami comfort.

For mains, the Caramel Soy Aged Beef Fillet arrived perfectly pink with a sauce so good I wanted to drink it, alongside Kung Po chicken plus garlicky Chinese green beans and shredded duck fried rice. Every dish delivered with bold flavours, spot-on textures, and the kind of balance that makes you slow down so you can savour it.

Drinks, I had the Eastern Dragon (Tanqueray, raspberry, pomegranate, with £1 from each one going to local charity Zest) and Against the Current (Tanqueray, smoky Aperol, lemongrass) which arrived with a flaming tag that was lit right at the table for pure theatre.

This was honestly one of the best meals we’ve ever had, and a reminder of why Tattu has such a big reputation in Leeds. Yes, it is a splurge, but there are fantastic value menus if you want the Tattu experience without going all out. The set lunch (from £24.50 two courses), evening Taste of Tattu (£29.50pp), Saturday brunch with free-flowing cocktails, and Imperial Sunday roast (£32.50pp) all bring the same stunning setting, attentive service, and punchy flavours at a friendlier cost.
