We finally made it past our last frost date 🙌🏻

That means it’s time to plant all the heat-loving summer crops that actually thrive in warm soil and hot temperatures.

If you don’t know when your last frost date is, do a quick online search. If you move plants out too early and a frost hits, it could ruin all of your plants!

There are a few varieties like pumpkins and squash that I will wait a little longer to get outside.

The secret to endless free basil is… ✂️

Pruning + propagating = more plants AND a fuller one.
It seems scary to cut your plants at first, but I promise it’s worth it!

Here’s what you need to know:

• Always prune just above a leaf node (where two leaves meet the stem). On young plants, wait for 3–4 sets of leaves and cut above the 2nd or 3rd set. This is what makes it branch into two new stems instead of one.

• Look for a healthy stem with multiple leaf sets before cutting - this keeps the plant strong and productive.

• Turn your cuttings into new plants by stripping the lower leaves and placing the stem in water (leaves stay above water). Roots usually show up in about a week.

• When roots are ~1–2 inches long, move to soil and keep it evenly moist while it adjusts.

• Harvest often. The more you cut (correctly), the fuller it gets. If you don’t, it grows tall, flowers, and slows down.

• Pinch flowers ASAP. Once basil flowers, flavor drops and growth slows.

• Basil likes full sun, warm temps, and consistently moist (not soggy) soil.

Are you growing basil?!

Before you plant anything, here’s exactly what I do to prep my garden 🌱

	1.	Remove Last Year’s Plants: Now that pollinators are starting to wake up, I clear out old plants so I’m starting with a clean slate for the season. 🐝

	2.	Pull Weeds + Loosen Soil: I get any weeds out early and lightly rake/turn the soil to break up compaction and get it ready for planting. Loose soil helps with root growth!

	3.	Refill Beds + Add Compost: After winter, beds always settle. I top them off with fresh soil and mix in compost to bring nutrients back in before planting!

Now that my beds are ready, I watch the weather and plan my planting date!!
