The Kukeri from Kolarovo Village, Petrich Municipality, Blagoevgrad Province, in Bulgaria wear costumes made from animal skins, horns, and preserved heads - elements traditionally associated with strength, fertility, and protection.

These taxidermy components are not decorative but symbolic, drawing on pre-Christian beliefs in which the power of animals was invoked to guard the community, ensure a good harvest, and drive away misfortune.

Rooted in ancient Thracian and Balkan ritual practices, the costumes deliberately blur human and animal form, creating figures meant to intimidate harmful forces and embody renewal at the turning of the year.

The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival is a Fenland winter folk tradition with recorded origins in the late 19th century, and likely much older roots in seasonal masking and agricultural ritual. A figure dressed entirely in straw is led through the town to dance, before being ceremonially burned at the festival’s close

Blessing the Thames - The parishes of Southwark Cathedral (on the South bank ) and St Magnus the Martyr (on the North bank) meet in the middle of London Bridge each January.

The clergy of both churches process to a point on the bridge and perform a short religious service during which a wooden cross is cast into the river.

The custom has only been established during the twenty-first century but harks back to the ancient ceremony in the Orthodox church of throwing a cross into the waters on the Sunday after Epiphany.
