ART • We lost another icon. Just this week, the death was announced of 97-year-old Japanese artist @yayoi._.kusama - one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists in the world. As soon as I heard the news, I rushed over to the @NCartmuseum to experience Light of Life again. 💡 Light of Life is a 7-foot tall mirrored hexagonal box with portholes that allow you to look inside the enclosed “infinity room.” 💡 From the museum: “During a career that has spanned more than six decades, Kusama's most well-known creations are her ‘infinity rooms,’ mirror-lined, kaleidoscopic works of art that create illusions of infinite space. In this enclosed version of an ‘infinity room,’ Kusama invites visitors to look inside a mirrored chamber. Gazing through the portholes reveals one's reflection, other viewers, and a two-minute show of colored lights that is dazzling and slightly disorienting. Multiplied by mirrors, viewers' reflections and colorful lights endlessly repeat on the chamber walls, confounding our perception of spatial limits. ‘Thousands of illuminated colors blinking at the speed of light,’ notes Kusama. ‘Isn't this the very illusion of Life in our transient world?’ “ 💡 Light of Life is a permanent installation at our NC Museum of Art. You’ll find it in the East Building, on the main entrance level. It was first put on display as part of “You Are Here” - a ticketed exhibit in 2018 that attracted more than 100,000 visitors from all 50 states to our museum. 💡 Have you seen Light of Life before? SUMMER • What’s on your Summer Bucket List Bingo Card? Did you see mine? (I included it in this video - so watch!) 😎 I just started this, and one of the first things I’ve marked off my list was “Boating on a lake.” My daughter wanted to go wakeboarding, and my friend Carla was gracious enough to invite us to her house at Lake Gaston. The weather was absolutely perfect (despite the initial forecast). 😎 This was already a Bingo Card day - not only experiencing lake life, but spending time with a dear friend and her family (whom I don’t get to see often enough). Then just before we were heading back to Raleigh, this happened. The most amazing summer sunset over the water. It was such a good feeling to witness.
