I had zero plans on a Saturday (which is very rare for me), so I decided to take myself on a Solo Saturday and finally check a few things off my bucket list. How I spent my day: 🥾 Hiked the Loudoun Heights Trail 👉 a 6+ mile hike near Harpers Ferry, WV, with sections of the Appalachian Trail and beautiful views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers 🍳 Brunch at Country Cafe 🏛️ Toured the George Washington Masonic National Memorial 👉 a fascinating historic landmark and museum in Alexandria, Virginia 🌮 Finally tried the highly-rated Tacos El Chilango in Arlington, VA. P.S. They are cash only! 📖 Finished a book on my balcony 👉 I’ve been reading the Silo series and am trying to get far enough ahead of the show that I can watch it on Apple TV+ without worrying about spoilers 😂 If you’ve ever been nervous about going places or doing things by yourself, let this be your sign to just go. Have you ever driven past this 9-story building in Alexandria, Virginia, and wondered what’s inside? 👀 The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a memorial and museum, Masonic temple, research library, cultural space, community and performing arts center, and one of the DMV’s most fascinating landmarks. Built in the 1920s, the Memorial is filled with incredible architecture, historic exhibits, Masonic artifacts, a massive George Washington statue, and a 9th-floor observation deck with 360° views of Alexandria and DC. You can tour it virtually or in person to see what’s inside! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Maryland Heights Trail for the epic view of Harpers Ferry. So much so that I’ve done that hike countless times. But it was finally time for me to try the sister hike across the river for a different perspective. The Loudoun Heights Trail is a challenging 6.3-mile out-and-back hike from the River Access parking area, with about 1,450 feet of elevation gain, taking you along the Appalachian Trail and through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. After the difficult climb up, you’ll reach Split Rock Overlook, where you get a beautiful view of Lower Town Harpers Ferry and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. The main pro is that you get a similar view of Harpers Ferry without the same crowds as Maryland Heights. A few things to know before you go: 🥾 The trail is rated Hard on @alltrails with significant elevation gain. P.S. I have a discount in my bio. 💧 There is no drinking water on the trail, so bring plenty with you. 🚻 There are no restrooms on the trail; the closest are in Lower Town and at the Visitor Center. 🌅 The trail is open during daylight hours only and is closed from sunset to sunrise. 💰 Harpers Ferry National Historical Park requires an entrance pass. Standard passes are currently $10–$20, with annual and America the Beautiful Pass options available. 🗑️ Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you bring in, including trash, and help keep this beautiful trail and park clean.
