I wish more people understood the difference between clout and reputation. Clout can be borrowed. Reputation has to be built.

If you want freedom from the ache of feeling like everyone else is accomplishing something while you’re struggling, invest in your craft instead of tap dancing for validation.

Claiming credentials, access, and achievements you haven’t earned will not dull that ache. The same time it takes to craft the lie is the same time it takes to actually build the craft.

The labor of death robs us of grief.

Almost immediately after losing someone you love, you’re expected to be functional. Make the phone calls. Notify the family. Answer the texts. Receive the visitors. Find the documents. Call the funeral home. Make decisions. Spend money. Choose dates. Choose clothes. Choose flowers.

Meanwhile, while your brain is still trying to comprehend that someone you love is gone.

That’s why having a plan for the end may be one of the most loving things we can do for the people we leave behind. Death is one of the few inevitabilities of being alive.

A plan cannot spare our loved ones from grief.

But it can spare them from having to make a hundred decisions while they’re grieving.

🗣️ CHICAGO (weather permitting) our Meetup and Read Up is a GO! 🟢 We are convening again on the Great Lawn to soak up the last bit of summer as we gear up for fall. The weather this season has been uncooperative, but tomorrow looks clear.

I look forward to another evening of reading 📖 with you 🌱 Please note the earlier time to account for the early sunset 🌅

We are living through an epidemic of certainty.

We are increasingly encouraged to decide quickly who people are, what they believe, what they meant, and whether they belong on “our side”.

Algorithms reward the hot takes. Social media rewards immediacy. Changing your mind or evolving your perspective is considered weakness instead of evidence that you learned something.

But healthy communities and literate societies require something different.

They require the humility to admit that our first interpretation may not be the right one. To ask another question. To seek information that complicates what we already believe. To remain teachable even when certainty would feel more comfortable.
