9 years ago I thought I had my life completely sorted out. I was working as an art assistant in tv and film, doing set design and loving every minute of it. And until this point, I’d had a multitude of experiences of seggsual harassment - and assault even a growing up, in my school uniform, at school, in the street, on nights out, even at work. And I had logged all of these experiences, which stored in a pandoras box if you will, which I kept tightly sealed.

With every unsolicited comment, every grope, every unfamiliar hand sliding up my thigh or around my waist, every time I looked over my shoulder to check i wasn’t being followed, i buried them all and locked away the key- it was just easier that way.

Until that one day when a man commanded me to “cheer up” and the lid on that box flew WIDE open. For the first time, I questioned the audacity of every single stranger who had made me feel uncomfortable. I questioned how nobody ever batted an eyelid, I questioned how normalised it was for women to feel so unsafe, so surveilled, so exposed.

So instead of just ignoring it, brushing it aside like i usually did, i decided to interview my friends about their experiences too, and photograph them standing in the place they were harassed to prove that these experiences happened all the time, all around us, in recognisable places.

I wanted to question why men felt so entitled to comment on women’s bodies, and show by when we ignore these vast range testimonies , we normalise an environment where casual misogyny is accepted and ignored.

I didn’t know it at the time, but it was this moment where everything changed, when I pivoted my career, when I became a gender equality campaigner, where every day since, I have been using those very experiences I locked away in that box, and the 100000’s of survivors experiences i get sent, to galvanise myself to do this work, and to tell these stories.

So it was a privilege to meet @sadiq and speak to him about my work with Cheer Up Luv, and talk about the work which still needs doing to tackle VAWG in London!

It is beyond obvious now, the way these powerful men view women, and the only reason we are talking about it? Because they have been exposed. the feminist movement, survivors, the violence against women sector - we knew. we always knew. now its just laid bare for everyone to see.
