“How much did your safari actually cost?” It’s the number one question I’ve been getting and I’m going to break down exactly how much we spent for our ten-day Kenya and Tanzania safari. 100% NOT SPONSORED!

The truth is, safari pricing varies wildly - you can do bare-bones budget camping or over-the-top ultra-luxury. We aimed right for the sweet spot in the middle with a mix of comfortable mid-range and deluxe lodges.

FYI kids and teens are usually cheaper but our 15-year-old was billed at the adult rate, making our final quote for three adults and one teen.

THE BASICS:
-10-day safari base for a private jeep for our family of four: $300 per person per day ($60 per day for our 13-year-old)
-Accommodations (9 nights, 2 rooms for our family of four): $2,650 per person
-Bush Flights (Nairobi ➡️ Mara ➡️ Serengeti): $1,080

UPGRADES/EXTRAS:
-Mara pickup: $300
-Masai Mara High Season Supplement: $300 per person
-Open-Sided Vehicle Upgrade: $200 per day in Kenya
-Temporary Operational Supplement: $100 per person

NOT INCLUDED (Tip: bring lots of cash!!):
-Guide Gratuities: $20 per person per day recommended
-Camp & Lodge Staff Tips: $10 per person per day recommended, dropped into a communal tip box to be split among housekeeping, chefs, and maintenance staff.
-Visas: $30 per person for Kenya and $100 per person for Tanzania
-Beverages & Laundry: Meals are included with your stay at all accommodations but drinks and laundry are extra.

TOTAL COST (not including our international flights to and from Africa): ~$28,000

And worth every penny! Again, there are lots of ways to plan differently and lots of ways to save or spend more depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Let me know if you have any questions!

Planning a trip to Africa can feel incredibly overwhelming. Between picking the right camps, figuring out bush planes, and mapping out border crossings, it is so easy to get paralyzed by the options.

But the truth is, there’s no such thing as a “perfect” itinerary. And everyone is working with a different budget and time constraints.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before booking:

✨Start Planning Early: This is not a last-minute trip. Safari camps are tiny (many only have 8 to 15 tents) and the best ones book out a year in advance, especially during peak migration season. Start planning 12 to 18 months out if you want options!
✨Use a Tour Operator: This is not a trip you want to piece together on Expedia. Local operators handle the complicated logistics like border transfers, park fees, and domestic hopper flights. We used @souloftanzania to plan our entire trip and everything was seamless!
✨Mind the Seasons: We went in late July/early August to catch the Great Migration in the north. If you go in February, you want to be in the Southern Serengeti for calving season. The animals move, so your itinerary should match the month!
✨The “Bush Plane” Factor: Driving between parks, especially between Nairobi-Maasai Mara and Maasai Mara-Serengeti can take almost a full day. Taking small hopper flights isn’t the cheaperst, but saves massive amounts of time.  Depending on your budget, you really have to weigh time versus money when planning your route.
✨Don’t Over-Move: It’s tempting to switch camps every night to cover more ground, but unpacking constantly is exhausting and staying 2-3 nights in one spot gives  you time to see what you actually came for! Nature doesn’t follow a schedule and each game drive is entirely different even in the same park or reserve.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE GREAT MIGRATION 🌍

✨What exactly is it?
It is the largest overland migration in the world. Over 2 million wildebeest and zebras make a continuous, year-round loop between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh grass and water, though different highlights happen at specific times of the year. The river crossings are the most dangerous part of their journey, as they have to face steep banks, raging currents, and hungry crocodiles.

✨How & when to see a river crossing:
The animals don’t follow a calendar but generally, the best times to see the herds cross the Mara River are from July through October in the Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara. Crossings typically occur from mid-morning through the afternoon once the herds have congregated and built up the collective courage to jump, but the time of day is completely unpredictable. There are many days when no crossings happen, even during peak season.

✨Patience is key:
The animals are incredibly skittish. Thousands of them will gather at the edge of the river for hours, staring at the water, only to suddenly get spooked by the wind and run away. You have to be prepared to sit in your jeep and wait, and be ready to move when they move because sometimes they will decide (for no apparent reason) to change location. It is a massive waiting game, but it is SO WORTH IT!

We were unbelievably lucky to see a massive crossing after waiting just a few hours and being on the verge of giving up on our first day in the Northern Serengeti and it was one of the most intense, chaotic, and breathtaking things we have ever experienced as a family.
