PART 2: Taking Place Training Outdoors 🐾🐶

Once your dog has mastered the basics indoors (Part 1), it’s time to add a little more difficulty! But don’t jump straight into a busy public space. Start somewhere familiar, like your backyard or patio.

Here’s the step-by-step:
1️⃣ Start with the mat
Have your dog go onto their mat. Once all four paws are on, reward them. Start adding your cue, like “Place” or “Go to bed.”

2️⃣ Add movement
Walk around and do different things while your dog stays on the mat. Toss treats onto the mat to reinforce staying put.

3️⃣ Practice settling
Sit down and focus on something else without giving your dog constant attention. Reward them periodically for staying on their mat.

4️⃣ Redirect, don’t reset
If they get up, calmly guide them back onto the mat and reward them once they settle again.

5️⃣ Increase distractions
Start doing something that requires more of your attention (and giving your dog less attention), like scrolling your phone or bringing over a friend, while continuing to reward your dog for staying in place.

The goal is to teach your dog that their mat is a place to relax and settle, even when you’re busy doing your own thing! 🥳
